전세계적으로, 비만 환자는 계속해서 증가하고 있으며, 당뇨병 환자들의 유병률 또한 급속히 증가하고 있다. 기존의 연구로 비만이 당뇨병을 유발하는데 있어서 가장 중요한 원인이라는 것은 확립되어 있지만, 비만이 어떠한 기작을 통해 제 2형 당뇨병을 유발하는가에 대한 것은 완전히 알려져 있지 않다. 최근의 연구들은 비만으로 의한 염증반응이 당뇨 전단계인 인슐린 저항성을 유발하는데 중요한 역할을 하며, 특히 내장지방에서 면역세포들이 이 과정을 조절한다는 것을 보여주고 있다.
본 연구실은 어떻게 면역세포들이 비만에 의해 조절되고, 그 후 이러한 면역세포에 의하여 유도된 염증반응이 어떻게인슐린 저항성을 유발하는 가를 연구함으로써, 비만에 의한 인슐린 저항성 발달에 대한 분자적 기전을  연구를 진행하고 있다. 특히 본 연구실은 1) Adipose tissue macrophage (ATMs)의 대사적 기능 평가, 2) 비만-유도 염증과 전신적 인슐린 저항성에서 지방조직 NK cells의 역할 규명, 3) 지방 조직의 염증반응이 간, 근육, b-cells에서의 인슐린 저항성을 조절하는 분자적 기전에 대한 연구들을 진행하고 있다.





또한 인슐린 저항성과 제 2형 당뇨병은 전신적 질병이기 때문에, 우리는 비만이 전신적 면역 세포들을 먼저 활성화 시키고, 이들이 인슐린 저항성의 발달을 유발시키는 지방조직의 국소적 염증을 유도할 것이라고도 가정하고 있다. 따라서, 본 연구실은 순환성과 국소 조직에 있는 면역 세포들이 어떻게 비만에 의해 조절되며, 이후 어떻게 이 세포들이 유도 인슐린 저항성의 발달을 조절하는지에 대한 연구를 진행함으로써 이 가설을 검증하고 있다

따라서, 우리는 본 연구실의 이러한 대사 질환 연구와 면역 질환 연구라는 융합 연구를 통하여, 제 2형 당뇨병 치료를 위한 새로운 치료법을 개발하고자 한다.
