6. Abstract: Biomaterials have been attracted much attentions as drug delivery carriers and tissue engineering scaffolds due to their biocompatible and biodegradable property in biomedical fields. However, it has been difficult to instantly attach the biomaterials on the water-rich tissue surfaces such as liver, intestine and peritoneum. Herein, we have developed the adhesive catechol-conjugated chitosan (Chi-C) patch for multi-purpose applications in the intraperitoneal space. Chi-C patch was prepared by facile freeze-drying methods using a multiple catechol groups-conjugated chitosan. This Chi-C patch showed the excellent mechanical property and superior adhesiveness on tissue surfaces. We have also prepared three mouse models to properly evaluate the performance of Chi-C patch in water-rich environments: intestine anastomosis rat model, colon cancer mouse model, and hemorrhaging rat liver model. This Chi-C patch is effective in the intestine anastomosis by biocompatible sealing of the incision sites, inhibits cancer growth by releasing 5-fluorouracil from the stably anchored patch, and arrest the urgent bleeding by robustly forming physical barriers on hemorrhaging sites. Thus, the multi-purpose Chi-C patch can usefully be exploited as adhesive biomaterials in intraperitoneal environments.
